Description: Learn the art of wool applique by making this cute needle book. The inside contains 4 pages for your favorite needles and a small flapped pocket for a pair of scissors or other stitching notions. Basic wool applique techniques will be covered including prepping, basting, whipstitching, and embellishing with a variety of embroidery stitchers.

Description: In class we will cover six different ways to appliqué, either by machine or by hand. Needle Turn, Faced edges using interfacing, Raw Edge, Bias Strips, Wool and Pieced Appliqué Shapes. Each technique offers unique instruction for sewing a variety of shapes to Background fabrics.

In this fun, hands-on class, you will spend the day using a variety of rulers to set up coiffed and unique feather designs as well as learning how to make your feathers stand out as a focal point with microquilting backgrounds. You definitely do not need to be a mathematician to enjoy the benefits of this class. Sarah will guide you through plotting and planning your feather blueprints that you can use for many quilts to come. Get ready to have fun!

Description: Mix and match multiple motifs to create a modern free-motion mash-up! This technique can be applied to any quilt, whether you want your quilting to be the star of the show, or you simply want to add a bit of background texture to your quilt. This jam-packed class will teach how to combine and design two or more filler motifs into something entirely new. Students will practice drawing the designs on paper, then apply what they’ve learned to sample swatches or orphan blocks. Note: Students should be comfortable with basic free-motion quilting.

Description: Starting with your own sharp photo of a pet, flower, or landscape, learn how to make a pattern for your own unique pieced picture quilt. Students will be asked to send me their proposed photo to be two weeks ahead of time for approval and possible editing.

Through discussion of each student’s project, we’ll touch on perspective, level of detail needed to communicate an image, use of straight-line vs curved piecing, what to include in the pattern and what can be added later through fabric selection, or with quilting, embroidery, pens, or paint.

At the end of the day, we will discuss how to use the pattern to make a quilt.

NB: This one-day class is design-only. You will not need a sewing machine, fabric, or sewing supplies. However, if there is specific fabric you are considering for your project and would like the instructor’s advice, please bring it!
