Description: If you’ve ever wanted to move beyond precut papers and ready made patterns, this workshop will give you the tools and confidence to design your own English Paper Piecing (EPP) blocks from scratch. In this hands on class, I’ll guide you through several approachable methods for creating and preparing custom shapes, opening up endless creative possibilities.
We’ll skip the usual hexagons and diamonds and dive straight into three adventurous design exercises. First, explore diamonds with a twist – stretching, skewing and reimagining this classic shape in fresh ways. Next, experiment with curved designs, learning how to draft and prepare flowing organic pieces that bring movement and softness to your blocks. Finally, we’ll tackle improvised tessellations, creating puzzle like interlocking shapes that repeat into one-of-a-kind patterns.
Along the way, you’ll discover how to turn sketches, motifs or even spontaneous doodles into EPP blocks with just a few simple materials. Each exercise will give you new tools and approaches to carry into your own projects.
By the end of the session, you’ll have designed your own original blocks and gained the confidence to keep experimenting at home with fresh inspiration to see the potential in every shape.

Description: Have you ever struggled trying to find just the right background fabric for your wonderful future quilt? Sometimes the colors, values, and textures are just not working. You visited every store in the neighborhood and still nothing! In this class we will demonstrate how to create Grace's Randomly Pieced backgrounds and also Randomly Appliqued backgrounds. We will discuss fabric selection for backgrounds that are dynamic and showcase the focal point. We will also discuss how to “mix” the fabrics so that they create a smooth, flawless background for a quilt. We will show you how to change value and colors smoothly, how to plan your color/value scheme so that the background works compatibly with the focal point(s) that will be attached to it. The RPB is a piecing process but the key here is that the shapes are placed and stitched Randomly so not only you will control the look of your background but you will also have ease of piecing, as there are NO points that meet in this pieced background unlike some controlled pieced stitching.

Learn to string or crazy piece and start busting those scraps out. Each student brings a bag of scrap to share, and everyone will work from the Scrap Mountain!
The idea of this class is that we all have scraps that need using up. The photos given for the class enrolment are examples ONLY. The booklet that comes with the class has over 30 quilt layouts in it - however there is no quilt PATTERN as such, as everyone’s quilts will be different with the help of the pattern book and an interlocking template set. Each student’s quilt will be different colours, sizes, shapes and designs, based on what you want to make on the day!
On day one we will make our fabric using string or crazy pieced techniques, and begin to design our quilt tops, and on day two we will start to cut shapes and look at design opportunities and layouts for each student.
This class is fun, freeing and a bit of mayhem! With Sarah's guidance of course.

Description: Learn how to transform your fabric scraps into beautiful hexies with renewed purpose. Diana’s Patchwork Sashiko Method featured in her book, “Patchwork Sashiko: Transform Your Scraps” is where tradition meets the non-traditional. The look is familiar; raw edged patchwork held together by uniform running stitches, but the method of how you’ll get there is unlike what you’ve done before. You’ll learn how to create a patchwork that appears random, but is very intentional. The slow-stitching is a unique flat-lay method that provides precision and the ability to create textiles as large as you like with ease. We will create a 7 hexagons; 3 Patchwork Sashiko hexagons and 4 single layer fabric hand-stitched hexagons. Then we’ll hand sew it all together using English Paper Piecing (EPP) to create a 7 hexie panel. You’ll want to incorporate this raw and textural look in all your projects!

Description: Learn how to integrate sustainability practices into your own closet using materials you already have. Diana’s Patchwork Sashiko Method featured in her book, “Patchwork Sashiko: Transform Your Scraps” is where tradition meets the non-traditional. The look is familiar; raw edged patchwork held together by uniform running stitches, but the method of how we’ll get there is unlike what you’ve done before. The slow-stitching is a unique flat-lay method that provides precision for stitching through multiple layers of fabric. In this class you’ll practice the method with your own fabric scraps, then apply what you’ve learned to your own special garment. The result is scrappy and raw and totally unique! Woven fabric of light to medium weight is recommended for the piece of clothing and it will be easier if the inside is easily accessible and the openings are wide. For instance, a top that fully buttons/opens in the front or a skirt.

Description: I have completely fallen in love with puffins. There is just something about those tiny birds, standing on rugged sea cliffs with the wind ruffling their feathers, that makes me smile every time I see them. After spending far too many evenings watching videos of puffins along the coastlines of Scotland and Ireland, I finally gave in and designed a quilt inspired by them.
Puffin Paradise is a 60" × 60" landscape quilt that brings together three of my favorite techniques. The quilt is built with Foundation Paper Piecing, accented with sweet English Paper Pieced flowers, and finished with appliqué that adds softness and dimension to the foreground.
During class, I will walk you through the process I use to tackle quilts like this without feeling overwhelmed. We will cover everything from organizing Foundation Paper Piecing sections and achieving crisp, accurate points to joining larger units with confidence. Along the way, you will also learn how to create the English Paper Pieced flowers and layer the appliqué so the landscape comes to life.
This class is designed for quilters who enjoy learning new techniques while creating something a little whimsical. It is a project that balances precision with creativity, and by the end of class you will have all the skills you need to continue bringing your own little colony of puffins to life.

Description: Dots and dots and dots of fun. Learn to make a classic Dresden Plate block by machine, accurately and quickly, and then hand appliqué it to the background using Sarah's user friendly appliqué and perfect circles techniques.
I love to look at antique quilts for inspiration and it often surprises me how "modern” they are. We perceive antique quilts to be traditional and dull coloured, but the more I look the more I find that would be wild even by today’s standards. This quilt was inspired by an antique quilt I saw somewhere, which incorporated Dresden plates with red circles between them. I loved the repetition of the appliquéd circles, the circles created by the plates, and the circles created by the space within the plates. Why not take circles to the max and add spots?
Of course, you can make your Dresden spotty or not, according to your whims!

Description: You’ll use different shades, colors, and fabric prints to craft a vibrant, colorful portrait of a funny yet intelligent-looking ostrich. While the technique works for any subject, we’ll keep it simple by focusing on the ostrich for this course. Starting with a traced image as the base, we’ll transform it into something imaginative, colorful, and one-of-a-kind. You decide how your piece turns out. Gather strips, scraps, or whatever fabric you have on hand, ideally from past projects, and fuse them together. Let your creativity run wild with this whimsical project—just sit back, relax, and create.

Description: Use the scraps that you might otherwise throw away and make a unique contemporary design.
Sew your smaller scraps into Improv Blocks or add skinny lines to larger scraps to make units that go together like a puzzle. There’s no right angles or straight lines unless you want there to be! We’ll focus on sewing our units together using expressive lines–gentle curves that follow the shape of the elements used, rather than a hard squaring off process.
You can also use leftover or orphan blocks in your composition if you like.

Description: Learn how to transform your fabric scraps into a beautiful textile with renewed purpose. The class starts with uniformly sized and shaped patchwork pieces to get you comfortable with the layout. Then, when you’re designing your own project later, you can utilize the fabric scraps waiting for new life in your sewing space. It’s a perfect way for helping to make your sewing practice more sustainable. This is a methods class so you won’t finish the textile, but learn everything you need to complete it on your own.
